The Age of Maturity
to the 40th Anniversary of the
Donetsk Institute for Physics and Engineering
named after O.O. Galkin, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
In the 60-ies years of the last century the Donbass, the most important industrial region of Ukraine was being rapidly developed. We felt an acute need for the organization of fundamental and still applied researches maximum oriented to meet the requirements of the region. With this aim in view, there was founded the Donetsk Scientific Center of the Academy of sciences of the UkSSR in 1965, the Donetsk Institute of Physics and Technology of the UkSSR Academy of Sciences being one of the system-forming institutions.
Now, it bears the name of Alexandr Alexandrovich GALKIN, an academician of the UkSSR Academy of Sciences, its founder and first director, whose contribution to the formation of the science of physics in the Donbass cannot be overestimated. It was he who put forward the idea of training researchers for the DonIPhT by sending the leading scientists to work as lecturers at the physical faculty of Donetsk State University (DonSU).
Since 1966 general and special courses to the students have been delivered by the academicians A.A.Galkin and V.I.Arkharov; associate member of the UkSSR Academy of Sciences K.V.Tolpygo and E.A.Zavadsky; doctor of physico-mathematical sciences, professor N.M.Kovtun and others. Cooperation between the DonIPhT and DonSU has proved to be quite fruitful. Nowadays, the leading positions in the Donetsk A.A.Galkin Institute of Physics and Technology of the NASU are held by the graduates of DonSU physical faculty, among them the director of the Institute, doctor of physico-mathematical sciences, professor V.N.Varyukhin, the vice-director, doctor of physico-mathematical sciences V.I.Kamenev, the heads of the research departments, doctors of physico-mathematical sciences T.E.Konstantinova, Yu.G.Pashkevich, V.I.Val’kov, G.G.Levchenko.
The names of the Institute directors – A.A.Galkin, N.M.Kovtun, E.A.Zavadsky, as well as the names of the prominent scientists, both who worked and still work there – have been introduced into the history of the Institute for ever. Besides those already mentioned, they also are: academician of the NASU V.G.Bar’yakhtar; associate members of the NASU B.I.Beresnev, L.T.Tsymbal; doctors of physico-mathematical sciences A.A.Borgardt, E.V.Zarochentsev, Yu.M.Ivanchenko, V.N.Krivoruchko, E.P.Stefanovsky, V.A.Telezhkin, A.E.Filippov, D.A.Yablonsky; doctors of sciences V.A.Beloshenko, V.P.Paschenko, V.Z.Spuskanyuck.
Over this period of the Institute activity, there have been founded, have got strong and successfully proceed working the scientific schools known both in Ukraine and abroad, among them:
- A.A.Galkin’s school of high pressure physics and solid spectroscopy;
- V.G.Bar’yakhtar’s school of the theory of magnetism;
- V.I.Arkharov’s school of mesoscopic phenomena in solid;
- V.B.Tolpygo’s school of the lattice dynalics and defects and biophysics;
- E.A.Zavadsky’s school of phase transitions in the extreme conditions.
The researches started by the founders of these scientific schools are being continued and developed by their disciples. In the field of high pressure physics there are known the works of the doctor of physico-mathematical sciences V.N.Varyukhin; the doctor of sciences V.A.Beloshenko; the doctor of physico-mathematical sciences V.P.D’yakonov; the doctor of sciences V.Z. Spuskanyuck.
In the field of magnetism, there still successfully contribute working doctors of physico-mathematical sciences A.M.Bogdanov, V.N.Krivoruchko, G.G.Levchenko, I.L.Lyubchansky, Yu.G.Pashkevich, S.V.Tarasenko.
The studies of mechanical phenomena in solids are being carried out by the doctor of physico-mathematical sciences T.E.Konstantinova, the doctor of sciences V.P.Paschenko, the doctor of physico-mathematical sciences Z.A.Samoilenko and others.
In the field of physics and lattice defects and biophysics, there explore their studies further doctors of physico-mathematical sciences S.V.Bespalova, E.V.Troitskaya, V.M.Shatalov.
Phase transformations in the extreme conditions are being studied by the doctors of physico-mathematical sciences V.I.Val’kov, Yu.D.Zavorotnev, V.I.Kamenev.
There are successfully developed new directions of the scientific work: solid-state physics in the extreme conditions; physics and technology of promising constructional and functional materials; physics of nano-systems in the external fields.
The research results of the Institute scientists, both fundamental and applied, have gained recognition among the scientists in Ukraine and in many countries of the world. They have been rewarded with seven State prizes of Ukraine in the field of science and engineering, three nominal – K.D.Sinel’nikov, B.I.Verkin, G.V.Kurdyumov – prizes of the NASU, and others.
The results of the researches for the last 15 years have been presented in hundreds of scientific papers published in the famous home and foreign scientific periodical issues, and in 25 monographs.
The DonIPhT of the NASU maintains wide foreign economy and scientific-production contacts with dozens of foreign institutes and firms, industrial enterprises, in particular: with Moldova in the field of the guide pre-roll fittings; with Switzerland – in the field of the magnetic field film gauges; with the USA – in the filed of the nano-material technology; with Germany - in the cryogenic equipment; with Spain – high pressure devices.
In recent years the researches are being carried out by the INTAS, NATO, CRDF grants, by the projects financed by the Scientific-Engineering Center of Ukraine. A joint project is being done with the General Electric International Operations Company.
To increase the level and efficiency of the studies done in the Institute, there was accomplished an optimization of the management structure and the number of employed. In 2001 there hived off and started its independent working the Institute of Physics of Mining processes of the NASU which continues the developments of those scientific directions once formed in the DonIPhT. More than 500 persons, among them about 40 doctors and more than 100 candidates of sciences work in 16 scientific departments, the design and technological division and in some auxiliary subdivisions.
The institute has a branch in the town of Lugansk as a joint laboratory with Lugansk National Pedagogical University. The Institute has got the physico-technological division as a branch of the physical faculty of Donetsk National University, a branch of the department “Plastic Metal Working” of Donetsk National Technical University, courses for a doctor’s and candidate’s degrees, a specialized council on defending doctor’s and candidate’s theses. There is issued a scientific journal “High Pressure Physics and Technology” distributed both in Ukraine and abroad.
40 years is the age of maturity both for a human being and for an organization. On the eve of its 40th anniversary the Donetsk A.A.Galkin Institute of Physics and Technology of the NAS of Ukraine, is armed with the experience gained but still with youthful energy and optimism; side by side with the already known schools, there appear new ones, and new ideas also emerge, and there are those who will realize them. In recent years there is noted a flow of young researchers, a pledge of the Institute future. The deed started by academician A.A.Galkin 40 years ago is still in progress.
